Granular Xylitol

Dear Dr. Ellie:

Instead of buying the mints and gum, could I just take 2 teaspoons of the granular xylitol each day? For a family of 8, this would be much more cost efficient.

Dear KS:

Research by University of Washington shows it does not matter how you take xylitol – mints, gum, granular, dissolved in water etc.

Zellies mints and gum are delicious which this makes them easy to use, but for economy you can certainly use the granular form.

Just make sure to address the following four facts:
It is important to have at least 6-10 grams regularly each day – less may not give you benefits.
Your “daily dose” should be split 3-4 different times during the day. Xylitol is most effective after you have finished eating meals/snacks/drinks (rather than being an ingredient in your meals).

Sorbitol (an artificial sweetener found in many diet products and commercial gums) – can sabotage xylitol’s healing of teeth

For healing cavities or damaged teeth, I recommend the use of certain oral care products to be used in harmony with xylitol.

At very least I would suggest Crest Regular toothpaste and ACT anticavity oral rinse for tooth cleaning.
