My new book, Mouth Care Comes Clean, was just released!
Mouth Care Comes Clean challenges the dental mantra that says if we want to avoid cavities and gum disease we need to “brush, floss and go for dental cleanings”.
This traditional advice may seem obvious and a good idea – but I challenge it as:
- Inappropriate for someone with serious dental or general health problems
Today we know so much more about the danger of ignoring the Oral-Systemic link, and since the 1960s there have been many, rarely discussed studies – looking at this connection between systemic and mouth health and the science of cavities and gum disease.
I wrote my first 200-page book – Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye because I was frustrated that people thought sugar was the only problem for teeth. Mouth dryness and acidity were never discussed in dental or hygiene school at that time. In addition, it appeared few people knew that a cavity could naturally heal – without the need for a dental filling, and all we needed to do was promote mouth conditions to encourage this mineralization process to occur.
This unfortunate void in professional educational continues today. Mouth acidity may now be part of the curriculum but few dental professionals have been instructed in the biology of useful bacteria that contribute to mouth health. Anyone with cavities, sensitive teeth or gum problems needs to nurture this helpful probiotic population and use strategies to support a healthy oral biofilm and a strong and diverse mouth ecology.
Without the foundation of healthy biofilm, dental problems will continue and patients will consequently endure a cascade of treatments as they age, often with escalating expenses and the repair of existing work that become more invasive and frequent over time.
I wrote Mouth Care Comes Clean as part of my life’s mission to empower patients and help them enjoy improved oral health.
