This review is from: Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye: A Do-It-Yourself Mouth Care System for Healthy, Clean Gums and Teeth (Paperback)

OK, OK. I never thought I’d recommend a book on dental hygiene, but this one saved me big bucks. Three months ago, my dentist told me I’d probably need to see a specialist for gum surgery. I was not convinced and went looking for other options. The author (who is a dentist) suggested an easy, cheap and pleasant regime of brushing and three types of mouthwash. Two weeks ago I revisited my own dentist who said, “I can’t believe it! It’s like you have a whole new mouth!” As with any type of self help book, use your common sense. However, this one really worked for me.

Here’s to a whole new mouth!

    Dear Dr. Ellie,

I have started using your system but am using Tom’s of Maine fluoride rinse instead of Act. Do I need to change to Act?

Also I read in your book that apples are good for the teeth but I saw some research that said apples damage the dentin more than soda. I hope its ok to eat apples as we eat a lot of them!

Lastly, I have periodontal disease in addition to a lot of decay, but the periodontist said its due to bacteria inside the flesh of my gums since I have good hygiene. After years of progressive gum recession I finally took a couple types of antibiotics and the swelling went down for about a month but now it seems to be returning. I read that the bacteria lie in wait until the body is weakened then communicate to each other that its time to attack. Is there anything you recommend for this problem? I don’t want to take antibiotics all the time since they kill all the good bacteria in the body too but I don’t want to lose my teeth. Do you think the Closys can get into deep pockets like mine?

Thanks so much for your help! I am very hopeful that your program will help me.

    • Hi Nora,

I’m not here to tell you which rinse to use – I celebrate being a free person with individual choice! I have simply discovered a “recipe” that is based on a specific mouth care products. If you use these precise products in an exact sequence, you can achieve amazing and often unbelievable oral health improvements. Most importantly, these improvements can be maintained ( without dental intervention) decade after decade. The system stimulates natural healing – for gums and teeth – and is the only way that I know to dentally empower you.

If you want to read more about the system to understand why I make these recommendations – there is lot of science to understand ( check my book Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye). If you don’t need to convince yourself with science, I’d suggest you use the Zellies Complete Mouth Care System (using ACT and Zellies mints and gum after every meal, snack or drink – even after apples!). Used exactly, I’d expect your gum problems to go away in about 8 weeks.

Remember – you need to use a well-designed, clean toothbrush, store it away from any toilet, get people around you on the Zellies system (periodontal disease spreads from person to person when you kiss or share food etc). Probiotics may be helpful and you need a good technique for brushing gums. I offer coaching – to talk with you on the phone to ensure you have all the details covered.

Don’t live with periodontal disease – this is dangerous. You must get rid of the opportunistic pathogens before they harm your heart, body, or brain. 8 weeks on my system ( done exactly) should help you to get rid of them, but you need to use the exact products I recommend. There are saliva tests that your dentist can do to confirm your progress – check out this site:

Hi Dr. Ellie – I am currently wearing a plastic retainer (the inman aligner) to straighten my teeth. Are there any special instructions for utilizing your system while wearing the retainer? I am hoping to strengthen the enamel on my front teeth as I have some craze lines there. I want to make sure the necessary minerals are still making it to my teeth if I am wearing the retainer.

    Thanks

    • It’s true that any retainer (or orthodontic appliance) makes oral care a challenge. There are many horrible statistics and stories about damage that happens while teeth are being straightened, or in retention. I usually advise the Complete Mouth Care System for two years before treatment – and throughout treatment – but the sooner you start the better! Don’t forget Zellies Gum or Mints are a vital component of the system and eat some after every meal, snack or drink to help protect teeth from damage.

    Hi Dr Ellie,
I have been using the Complete Mouth Care System for almost 4 weeks and singing its praises to everyone who will listen (alas, many won’t!). While flossing, I popped a crown off molar #3 two days ago (first time this has ever happened to me), Tooth is not painful.

Within 12 hours I was able to get an emergency appointment with a dentist who is not my regular dentist (my dentist was out of town). He advised against re-gluing the crown and advised me to get restorative treatment as quickly as possible (I am starting restorative work on multiple teeth within 2 weeks, with this tooth being top priority).

I have used salt water rinse, xylitol and continued using Crest, but hesitated to continue use of Closys, Listerine (which I use quite diluted) and ACT.

Is it OK to use the entire system when there is a bare stump of a tooth that has no enamel?
Thanks in advance for you help!

    • Barbara Krall says:

      Hi Dr Ellie,
An update: the tooth that popped the crown was extracted on July 29 (4 different dentists agreed that it was too sick to keep).

Concerns about sensitivity / allergic reactions to products in CMCS:
For 12 days post-extraction I did not use the 3 rinses, although I have continued using Crest, granular xylitol (10 grams / 1 gram 10 times per day) and salt water rinses.

I can’t shake the feeling that my teeth (and body) are becoming progressively more sensitive to something in the rinses. I have a history of adult-onset food allergies and I also have esosinophilic esophagitis, where esophageal spasms that make it difficult to swallow are triggered by food allergens. I avoid my known allergens and rarely have reactions anymore, so when a new reaction suddenly pops up, I take it seriously.

When I used the the entire system last night for first time since extraction, I had a whole-body reaction: heart palpitations, feeling faint, and my throat closed up enough to be difficult to swallow. It took several hours for symptoms to subside. The next day my teeth were very sensitive to room-temperature foods, but xylitol, Crest and salt water are OK.

I am somewhat discouraged by not being able to use the full mouth care system, and to remove plaque I started using a Hydrofloss on the lowest possible pressure setting.

I listen to my body and while I don’t understand why it seems to be reacting the way it is, it clearly IS reacting and telling me don’t use the rinses (at least for now).

Comments? Thanks in advance for your help!
