Fluoride

Hi Dr Ellie,

I came across this and found it a little disturbing. I guess if we spit out well enough we are OK? My three yr old does a good job, but I’m sure swallows a little, plus don’t we absorb it into our gums?

Thanks,
AS

Fluoride toothpaste: Toothpaste that contains fluoride is dangerous to your health because it is a toxin. Before fluoride was introduced as a cavity fighter, it was used as a rat poison. The health claims about fluoride is very misleading. It does little to prevent tooth decay but does a great job destroying your thyroid gland, metabolism, and increasing your risk of cancer and sterility. Toothpaste that contains toxic ingredients, such as fluoride and sodium lauryl sulphate (SLS), will usually have warning labels on the back of its tube. On the other hand, toothpaste that does not contain toxic ingredients usually has no warning labels. Now, why would fluoride toothpaste manufacturers put warning labels on their product? The main reason is because they know that it is toxic. People have been known to die from swallowing fluoridated toothpaste. A good rule of thumb when buying consumer product is to look for warning labels. If the warning labels tell you information that is life threatening, you should avoid it, especially if it is something that you put in your mouth or on your body.

Hi AS,

Thanks for your message.
The fluoride debate has been a long and complex one.

I have, in fact, posted my opinions about fluoride on my website – with the entire chapter out of my book Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye.

I have studied the fluoride argument since the 1970s – when I gave too much fluoride to my kids as supplements.

I really GET it – I do!
BUT don’t be afraid of Crest or ACT when used correctly in my system.

I never recommend fluoride treatments at the dentist. I never recommend the strong gels and strong toothpastes – more is NOT better  ( it’s just more expensive!!) For children without cavities fluoride gels are not necessary at all – they are too strong.

The fact is we don’t want to EAT/consume fluoride. Children under 3 years old normally eat toothpaste – so this is why they should not have fluoride toothpaste before the age of 3 – unless they have cavities.
Children are better to brush with xylitol.

Adults who have fillings/ cavities or who have any risk factors for bad teeth or gums, NEED the protection of a fluoride toothpaste – and should follow my system of use. If they don’t, they will probably end up with broken fillings, new fillings, crowns, bridges, implants or extractions etc.
( Remember that all these treatments are FAR more toxic to their system that a bit of topical toothpaste that you spit out). The most important feature of toothpaste with fluoride is WHAT IS IN THE PASTE – WHAT KIND OF FLUORIDE??

I recommend the “gold standard” of paste – ( it’s no longer promoted – it’s probably expensive to make with small profit margin – AND it’s made in the US !!) This paste has silica, sodium fluoride and no glycerin.  The silica is the correct grind to be non-abrasive to enamel – so it will not damage teeth.
I use it at least twice a day – and my kids have used it from the time they could spit!

Here is the link to my debate about fluoride ( if you are interested to read it all…..) WHO wrote this anyway – It sounds like someone selling THEIR brand of toothpaste – How are THEIR teeth?? Ha!!
