Hi Dr. Ellie,
My daughter is 28 months old. She was breastfed (including night time) and her father and I have terrible teeth (cavities/periodontal issues). She now drinks from a cup, doesn’t drink anything other than milk and water. Until about a month ago her teeth were perfectly white-that’s when a little orange/brown spot appeared on one of her front top teeth near the gum line. At the same time I noticed some white along the gum line on her two front teeth. I tried brushing it off but it wouldn’t come off. Now that her teeth have come out further the white is no longer near the gums-both front teeth have a thin white line across them. I don’t want to take her to a “traditional” dentist (which seems to be all we have in this area) because I’m concerned they will do more harm than good. I have been giving her 6.5g of Zellies Xylitol throughout the day and rubbing ACT on her teeth with a q-tip in the morning and before bed for about two weeks. Today I’m noticing more white along the gums in her bottom teeth. Is there anything else I can do to try to stop this process on my own?
Thanks in advance.
Cavities start as a softening of the tooth surface – and as the teeth soften, they look white and chalky.
The next step is that the tooth surface caves in – forming a cavity.
This is totally reversible – and the sooner the tooth is helped – the quicker the healing.
The first thing to realize is that this damage is being caused by germs.
These mouth germs float around in your saliva, but they also stick to the surface of teeth and make acids – that damage the teeth.
You and your husband are infecting you baby’s mouth with germs from your own cavities and bad teeth.
THE ONLY WAY to stop this infection is to clean up everyone’s mouth!
The great ( and amazing) news is that one teaspoon of xylitol each day – can do that for everyone!!!!
You and your husband should add a teaspoon of xylitol crystals/granular to water and sip this during the morning – think of this as a “health drink” – that you drink FOR your child – so she can be healthier.
You and he can also enjoy Zellies mints and gum after meals – but use the crystals to ensure you have enough xylitol each day.
Now you and your husband will be controlling the spread of cavity infection – even if you still have bad teeth and/or cavities that are not filled.
( I would like you to use my complete mouth care system – but we can talk about this later!!)
I suggest you continue what you are already doing.
Wipe these teeth with a little of the ACT rinse a couple of times a day.
Put a tiny bit on xylitol into drinks – and ensure that you end EVERY meal or snack with a little xylitol.
Does your daughter take vitamins (I don’t know where you live) but sunshine and vitamin D is important for tooth health.
Whole organic dairy is also helpful – does she like yogurts?
Zellies is launching a new product in a couple of weeks – ZELLIEBEARS – for kids.
These “quick dissolving” bears provide 1.4 grams of xylitol in each delicious bear.
If you like – she could end each meal with one of these – after breakfast, lunch and dinner.
This will be a new line for Zellies – helping Moms and Dads with a simple remedy to get enough xylitol to your child each day.
We expect to start shipping this product on December 1st – so stay tuned for details!
Hope this helps – a picture of the problem teeth would be useful if you need more help.
