Homemade Toothpaste Recipe

Hi Dr. Ellie!

I don’t know if you remember me, but you got us hooked on xylitol and your system! 🙂 I’m a faithful reader of your blog. 🙂 One of my emails to you is here: http://askdrellie.blogspot.com/2008/07/healing-cavity-and-my-whiter-teeth.html

As an update, nearly 3 years later (!!!), we now have dental insurance. My molar that was possibly-in-need of a root canal had actually broken a little (due to the decay inside) but thanks to your system, I had no infection and no pain! I didn’t chew on that side at all after the tooth broke (for about 2 years it was broken).

I am thankful that I was able to go to the dentist a few months ago, and of course I wanted to get that tooth fixed. They were so surprised that the tooth wasn’t infected or painful despite it’s broken condition. (I do know the tooth was still “alive” because it could feel hot and cold or intense pressure.)

I read through all your advice about root canals and it helped me feel better about getting one (my first and hopefully last!!).

I was able to go to an endodontist in the Seattle area here and had the root canal done. The procedure and recovery went really well and now I have a crown on that tooth.

I’m glad I was able to keep the tooth clean and pain-free while waiting to have dental coverage so we could better afford the root canal, and I’m glad I was able to have the root canal at the best opportunity (not infected). And now I’m chewing on both sides of my mouth! Yay! 🙂

Two questions for you, if you have time:

A dental hygienist told me that using ACT right after Listerine would negate the effects of the fluoride in the ACT. Have you ever heard this, and do you have any input about why it might or might not be true? I’m not changing from your system, but was just curious. (I may ask the hygienist myself next time I see her!)

Secondly: What do you think about this article and recipe? (link removed) Does it sound harmful, or possibly okay? Someone asked me about it and I thought I’d love to get your insight! 🙂

Have a great day!

TL

Hi TL,

I am happy that I was able to help you.

It is interesting that although my system of oral care has protected you for years, one trip to the dentist and you question the products that I recommend!

ACT used immediately after Listerine is powerful – or I would not recommend it.

I have actually seen oral care companies try to copy the idea by mixing these two rinses together – in Total Care Products.

Studies show its effectiveness – but I prefer one rinse followed by the other as the ultimate way to oral health.

I cannot recommend the paste you suggest – it could wipe out your healthy natural biofilm – ( the covering over your mouth that offers protection to teeth and gums).

Be careful – oral health is not a game – and sometimes wrong moves can cause years of aggravation – with gum recession or worse.

I suggest you use my system – in the exact form – with sufficient xylitol and the exact products that I recommend!

By the way – I will be in Seattle for the first time ever next week – talking to physicians about Oral Health!

Best Wishes,

Ellie
