Question for Dr. Ellie Phillips

Hi Dr. Ellie!

I’m writing to you, because I’m very interested in your mouth care system. The problem is that I live in Slovakia and only products I was able to get are granular xylitol and Listerine. Not much, really… 🙂

So, I would very appreciate your advice for some good substitute products I can find in my country.

1. The first thing is CloSys mouth rinse. Actually, I found it under the name RetarDex, as you mentioned it somewhere on your blog. I would really love to buy it, but as a student I find it very expensive.

So, can I not push on this one and use only salt water, or something like that to neutralize my pH? (Or even xylitol?)

2. The second item is toothpaste. I use Elmex brand and dentists here really recommend it. It is a Swiss brand and is very popular and trusted here, and maybe the whole Central Europe, I’m not sure. I googled the ingredients this paste contains, so here they are:

Elmex ANTICARIES toothpaste: Aqua, Hydrated silica, sorbitol, hydroxyethylcellulose, olaflur (fluoride active substance: amine fluoride (1250 ppm F-), aroma, titanium dioxide, and saccharin

It contains this amine fluoride, which is claimed to be more effective with teeth compared to sodium fluoride in most toothpastes.

I found also this toothpaste, maybe it’s fine too?

Curaprox Enzycal: Aqua, Sorbitol, Hydrated Silica, Steareth-30, Glycerin, Chondrus, Crispus Extract, Aroma, Titanium Dioxide, Disodium, Phosphate, Sodium Fluoride, Citric Acid,

Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Saccharin, Potassium Thiocyanate, Lactoperoxidase, Amylogglucosidase, Glucose Oxidase

Can you recommend any of these two toothpastes by just looking at the ingredients? Btw, I found RetarDex one, which you recommend, but this brand is too expensive for me, as I said.

3. Is mouth rinse after Listerine. ACT is not sold here, which sucks… 🙁 But I tried and found these two which I think can work:

Sensodyne Pronamel Mouth Rinse: Aqua, Glycerin, Sorbitol, Poloxamer 338, PEG 60, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, VP/VA Copolymer, Potassium Nitrate, Sodium Benzoate, Cellulose Gum, Aroma, Sodium Fluoride, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Cetulpyridinium Chloride, Sodium Saccharin, Xanthan Gum, Disodium, Phosphate, Sodium Phosphate, Cl 42090, Curasept ADS 205 (again Swiss brand), Purifed Water, Xylidex 16041, Cremophor RH 40, Propylene Glycol, Sodium Citrate Tribasic, Sodium Fluoride, Chlorhexidin Digluconate, Vitamin C, Simperonic F 127, Sodium Metabisulphate, Blue FD&C, Peppermint MA 644, Anethol, Menthol, Green Mint, Essential Oil of Cloves, Essential Oil of Cinnamon

I know some French person wrote you that he/she uses Elmex mouth rinse and you responded it should be OK. But I learned, that it has pH only 4.3, which isn’t very good after Listerine, is it? 🙂

Another question I have is if the cavities that I have and want to heal, can get worse over time (but using your system)?. Because I had some before and by x-ray pictures I know some got worse (I was not using the system then). Can you guarantee me, that it will if not heal, just stop the process of decaying? If so, how does it happen?

Thank you so much for your work… And sorry for my English. 🙂

Sincerely,

J from Slovakia

Hi J,

Thanks for your question and your confidence in this system. On my website I have some thoughts that relate in some way to your situation:

https://www.zelliescleanwhiteteeth.com/Ellie-Phillips-My-Recommendations.aspx

You will see that if you live in the desert without any access to products xylitol is my main recommendation as your dental defense.

If you can use the Elmex toothpaste, I think this looks the best choice you have to replace Crest.

I would leave it as that and simply use Listerine to disinfect your toothbrush every day.

I think this simple regimen will be very important for you and will help you improve your oral health, especially if you use this regimen twice a day and always before bed at night.

I agree if you suspect that you have an acidic mouth using some salt water or xylitol before brushing would help take away mouth acidity.

Great understanding of the situation on your part I would be very interested to know how this program works out for you!

Best Wishes,

Ellie

  • Hi! I live in Wales and I can’t find ACT mouthwash. Is Macleans confidence mouthwash the same thing with Sodium Fluoride at 250 ppm fluoride? Many thanks!

    • It is sometimes hard to find the products I suggest in other countries. I only recommend products I KNOW (after decades of experience) will work. This means, unfortunately I cannot recommend any products I do not know. On the other hand, if the ingredients seem similar – you may want to give them a try. We really appreciate feedback – so we can let other people learn from any of your experiences with these similar products!

My parents were from Cardiff and Swansea – so I send personal family wishes to Wales! Thanks for your message. Ellie
