Clinpro 5000 Toothpaste

Dear Dr. Ellie,

I have a question, but first I wanted to thank you so much for your time in answering questions on your blog. I have learned a lot and have been using your system for a couple of months now. I shared your information with my 83-year-old mother-in-law because she is very concerned about dental health. She was pleased to find out about your system. She went to her dentist and showed them the information (I didn’t know she was > going to do this), anyway, they said for her condition – which as far as I can tell from asking her is gums receding – nothing that you can get “over the counter” is sufficient and that she needs to use this toothpaste: Clinpro 5000 by 3M. The only active ingredient is: Sodium Fluoride (5000 ppm F) 1.1% w/w (0.63% w/v fluoride ion). The dentist sells the toothpaste for $25 which seems very high to me.

What is your opinion of this toothpaste and it’s necessity for someone with receding gums (maybe severe).

Thank you so much for your time.

Sincerely,
VH

Dear VH,

I have to be careful how I reply – since I cannot get between a patient and the professional advice they have been given. I know how well my system works. I am so convinced about its effectiveness I have put my career, money and time on the line for it. None of the products I recommend make me money – You can go to Walgreens and buy most of what you need. I have no connection with the companies ( except Zellies xylitol mints and gum). I tell people that any xylitol will work – (Zellies just taste best) so I can really say I have no involvement at all. I often tell patients that sharing this system with their dentist will usually get this reaction – nothing is STRONG / Powerful enough. The key to my system is these very mild and ordinary rinses work in combination with each other – positively adjusting the chemistry of the mouth. Looking individually at each rinse – it does not look like much! ( Like a bowl of flour, eggs, butter and sugar……but check out the cake!) You need every part of the system – like a cake recipe – for the miraculous results. I usually tell patients to try my system before their next dental appointment and watch the reaction. When the dentist says “wow” – I suggest they say NOTHING the first time – otherwise most dentists will debase the system and suggest stronger pastes and gels.

After 6 more months – when you go back with even better oral health – your Health Professionals will usually DEMAND to know what you are doing – Ha! Your mother could try the new gel for two weeks and see what she thinks. Then she could try the system for two weeks and compare the way her teeth feel. Alternatively, she could use the system and brush with the gel at the end …….but then any improvements will be claimed by her dentist! This is a tough call – I guess it depends on her confidence level and if she is prepared to pay $25 for the paste.

My question to you: Has your mother always been to the same dentist – and if so, why suddenly is “preventive help” being offered? This damage has been going on for fifteen to twenty years. Anyone who starts using Closys will “freeze” dental time – and stop gum recession in its tracks. I wish I could have helped her many years ago. Sorry not to have a better answer – good luck and please keep me in the loop! I am interested in the end of the story – whichever treatment she decides to follow!

Best Wishes,
Ellie

My dentist is asking $30 for 4 oz !! I understand that 3Ms Manufactors Suggested Retail Price is $7.3+ !!!!! 3M says sales are thru distributors and they won't tell me which dentists in my area sell this toothpaste and for how much or how much they sell it to dentists.
