Dear Dr. Ellie:
I am currently suffering from sjorgrens with dry mouth and a very irritated tongue (possibly from the acidic mouth?). I have spent so much money on products that end up not working and would greatly appreciate even a SINGLE product that works. Thank you so much,
G
Hi G,
I am sorry for your mouth condition. I would be happy to talk to you more with suggestions if you are interested.
I am a clinical dentist with 35 years of helping people who have dry and acidic mouths.
I would highly recommend the Zellies mints for you – eat them freely during the day and night.
Another option is the spray even granular xylitol dissolved in water to sip during the day or night.
Xylitol stimulates natural moisture in the mouth the safest and most effective solution for people with dry mouth.
Good luck and let me know if I can help you.

Biotene manufactures an OTC gel that you coat the inside of your mouth with at night. The Biotene brand toothpaste, on the other hand, is free of irritating additives, but in my experience the cleaning power is not as good as harsher toothpaste formulations containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate. The gel is a keeper, though. My teeth had become painful and sensitive within days of the onset of a sjorgrens type episode consisting of severely dry skin, parched mouth and incredibly painful joints — symptoms that persisted six weeks despite heavy doses of prednisone from an ER doc who refused to do any test to discover what my problem was prior to prescribing the prednisone (which in turn meant that the specialist I later saw had nothing to go on). The one good thing I can say for my experience is that the Biotene gel undoubtedly saved my teeth. Please don't hesitate to recommend and/or try it.
Several radiation oncology clinics, familiar with prescribing Biotene, are now recommending my system of oral care to their patients. They recommend patients start on the complete mouth care system before any surgery or radiation ( to build the strength of their teeth) and then these patients cruise through the spell of dry mouth enjoying Zellies mints and gum or just xylitol dissolved in water – whatever is most palatable for them. We have had so many happy patients with this system – and the results appear far superior to any other currently available treatmentsYou may want to experiment with xylitol and make your own comparison.
