Drinking Baking Soda?

Hello Dr. Ellie,

Sometimes I drink this product called Gingera to help with my acid reflux. It contains sodium bicarbonate. Is sodium bicarbonate a concern only if swished in the mouth? Or is there bad effects when just drinking it as well?

Thank you,
R

Hi R:

I don’t know the answer to this! Problems with baking soda seem to affect women more than men- their gums just recede and disappear. If you have any signs of gum recession I would consider this may be an issue. I would look to xylitol to help protect your teeth from this product and also to help get rid of your acid reflux.I would suggest you eliminate sorbitol in all forms ( diet drinks, commercial diet candies and chewing gums) and replace with products that are all natural and contain xylitol. Sorbitol is in many things unfortunately it has the ability to grow plaque bacteria I have often seen acid reflux symptoms associated with this.Sorry I cannot give you a definitive answer hope this helps,

Ellie
