Baking Soda in Toothpaste

Dear Dr. Ellie:

What is your opinion about the use of baking soda in toothpaste products?

Hi RF,

I never recommend any oral care product that contains baking soda. I recommend only Crest Original toothpaste, used as part of my Complete System of oral care.

There are stories of baking soda combined with peroxide controlling acute periodontal infections.
For a couple of weeks it may be safe, but long term use frequently causes gums to recede.
The worst part is that the recession is often severe and without any warning: No pain and no symptoms the gums just disappear 🙁

For this reason I never recommend any product with baking soda.
You may be OK for a weekend but definitely be careful and watch out for gum issues.

On the subject of peroxide which is often used as a “natural” tooth product. Peroxide can cause mercury in silver fillings to vaporize and come out of fillings so be careful with peroxide if you have silver fillings in your teeth.

Hope this answers your question,

Yikes! That is good to know…thank you for sharing. I didn't know about this and I try to use natural substitutes, but I will not use baking soda or peroxide from now on.
