Xylitol Children’s Vitamins

Hi Dr. Ellie,

I used to give my kids gummy vitamins that contained sugar. When I found out that my son had cavities, we stopped the gummies because I didn’t like the idea of them eating something with so much sugar that was also sticky. I have been searching for an alternative to sugar-sweetened kids’ vitamins, but I haven’t found any that are right for us. I don’t want them to ingest aspartame or the like. I was wondering if you knew of any xylitol-sweetened vitamins or have you considered developing some? We are looking for a multi-vitamin and a calcium supplement for the kids. We did find a fish oil that they tolerate OK, though I know if there was a xylitol version they would much prefer it!

Thanks!
– K

Hi K,

I do not know of any really good children’s vitamins that are made with concern about teeth and health.

If your child is being exposed to xylitol (therefore without harmful strep mutans bacteria) I would suggest you select a vitamin sweetened with sugar and avoid those with oligosaccharides (which are generally bad for teeth) or artificial sweeteners (sucralose, aspartame etc)

I wonder if Nature’s Sunshine would have something – they also have a xylitol product line and make vitamin products. I would contact them and ask this same question. The other company would be USANA a Swiss vitamin company that may have knowledge. I would be interested in the outcome of your search.

I will keep this in mind.
Thanks again for your question,

Ellie

I'm not sure if this question has been answered, being that I'm replying two years late, but I just ran across these Children's Multivitamins sweetened with Xylitol & dextrose. I haven't tried them (yet)… Maybe Dr. Ellie can offer an opinion?http://www.catherinescauses.com/Kirkman-Childrens-Multi-Vitamin-Mineral-Wafers-with-Xylitol-Kirkman-Child-Chewable-Multi.htm
