  1. Hi Dr. Ellie,I have to say that I was a bit skeptical of your mouth wash system when I stumbled across your blog. On my last dental visit, a few months ago, I had 3 cavities that needed fillings. When I went to the Dentist yesterday for fillings, I only had one. I didn't even need a shot for this. Needless to say, I was super excited and am now a believer. I do have a question though. I am worried about the long term affects that this system will have on my teeth. The directions on ACT say that you are only supposed to use it once a day. Will using this rinse more than once a day damage my teeth?Michelle

  2. Hi Michelle, I have no idea why the instructions say "once" a day – I will try to find out from the manufacturer. Research shows that tooth mineralization is stimulated by this weak fluoride solution. The beneficial effect lasts for the time that the liquid is in direct contact with the tooth surface.Once you wash your mouth or eat or drink, the benefits stop. This is why it is best not to eat or drink for half an hour after using ACT. ACT is a solution of very dilute fluoride.I was told once that this product was designed years ago for pharmacists to sell as a dental drink!Once dentists understood how fluoride works, they stopped suggesting that you drink fluoride and simply suggest you rinse with it and spit it out. I like to explain that this fluoride rinse is close to the dilution of fluoride that is in drinking water (approximately 1- 2 parts per million). When dentists coat teeth in dental offices with fluoride gel or foam these products range between 9,000-11,000 parts per million in strength (that is strong stuff!). Personally I regularly rinse with my suggested system twice or three times a day and have done so for years and years. My teeth feel better and better, and remineralization has kept them in excellent shape over the years. Hope this helps,Ellie
