Dear Dr. Ellie,
I found your email on the website “Ask Dr. Ellie“.
I am 23 years old and have not been to a dentist since I was 19 (my parents used to pay for me to go to the dentist, and since then I have not been able to afford a dental visit). I finally have a job that will give me dental coverage after six months, so I am planning to go to a dentist then, but I am very afraid for this. I have always brushed my teeth twice each day, and for the past year I have been flossing regularly and using ACT anti cavity rinse. I also already use the Crest regular paste. I just found your system, and I plan to implement it as soon as possible (adding the Closys, Listerine, and xylitol to my regimen), and I was wondering if you think it will help get my teeth in better shape for my visit? I know that I have cavities (One of my top molars is quite sensitive at least once a week, and I can see tiny “holes” in some of my teeth. Plus I can see grooves and stains along the biting surfaces of the bottom teeth), and even with insurance, fillings will be very expensive. I am hoping to need as few as possible, and I was hoping you could give me some advice on how to maximize the benefits of your system. I brush my teeth three times a day now, and I always rinse my mouth after eating and chew sugar free gum (now I will start using the xylitol method).Thank you very much for taking the time to read this, and for any advise you can give.
Yours Sincerely,
C
Hi C,
I have a book being published this summer which I think may be useful to you to put your mind at ease about missing dental visits!
The book is called Kiss Your Dentist Goodbye with the subtitle: Imagine Loving Dental Visits!
I talk directly to people like yourself who fear that their teeth may be in bad condition, may not be immediately able to seek dental professional advice but who truly care to do the right thing.
My book was written to empower people to help them understand warning signs and what can be fixed with mouth rinses. It sounds as if it will be easy for you to adopt the complete mouth care system you will love it! Using this system will prepare you for your future visits and I expect you will be happily surprised when you finally go and have your teeth evaluated.
Be sure to tell your dentist (not that it is so long since you last went) but that you want the least possible treatment and if a tooth can heal on its own to please give it some time to do this. Such dentistry is called minimally invasive dentistry and there is a website www.WCMIDentistry.com if you are looking for such a dentist who believes in xylitol and remineralization of teeth.
If you do this system, and eat healthy food ( for your immune system) I cannot suggest any other thing that will help except educate yourself as much as possible on what goes on in the mouth. You may find the Power of Xylitol booklet useful it is about xylitol and this is covered again in my new book if you want to wait for that one!
Thanks for your message and please let me know what you think ,and how your dental visits go in the future.
Best Wishes,
Ellie Phillips
