Gums and Deep Cleaning

Dear Dr. Ellie,

I was having pain in my gums and the dentist did a deep cleaning which took about an hour but said it may not help as the roots are showing…I read that a deep cleaning takes a couple of visits to do it right. I still have pain…what is my next step?

ERM

Dear ERM,

Thanks for your question. I will try to keep this as short as possible:

There are 2 things that you must NOT do:
–>Do not use any whitening/bleaching products
–>Do not use any hydrogen peroxide or baking soda (even in rinses or toothpaste)

There are 2 things that you NEED to do:

1. Make sure that you have a well designed and bacterially-clean toothbrush.
It is easy to clean a toothbrush with Listerine swish the head of the brush around in a little Listerine and then rinse under water.

Allow your brush to air dry every day completely away from any toilet area of the bathroom (germs from the toilet spray into the air and may land on your toothbrush).
This is the number one piece of advice for anyone with gum disease.

2. Go to Walgreens (or other similar store) and purchase the following: follow my directions on how to use these products the results will amaze you (and your dentist)

I can’t figure out how to submit a question, so I will try asking in the comments; I’ve been using Crest Pro Health, and I am switching to Listerine–but I have an almost-full new bottle of the Pro Health. Will it work just for cleaning my toothbrush after I brush?

  • Dr. Ellie says:

I doubt it.How about a toilet cleaner?…….Maybe put the Prohealth at the back of your bathroom closet and keep it there for a little while. Mark a date six months out on your calendar. This will be the day that you decide which is the best product – (after a six month trial period!)And I expect you will then consider it as a toilet cleaner!Ellie

What about Colgate Total Toothpaste? I have read many source that recommend it as very good for fighting bacteria in your mouth since it contains the anti-bacterial chemical “triclosan.” Would Total work also?

  • Dr. Ellie says:

I only recommend regular Crest Original toothpaste.I have many reservations about other well known toothpastes. Some are too abrasive (even ones that contain xylitol) others are too acidic and some contain questionable ingredients.I list Colgate Total in this final category because of the triclosan it contains.Triclosan reacts with the chlorine in tap water to form chloroform: (see links below) I only recommend Crest Original Toothpaste. When used in my recommended Complete Mouth Care System the results are amazing.I would suggest you put all your pastes and rinses away in a safe place and try my system for a couple of weeks.Do your own comparison! Here are some links:Yhe blog entries already on Colgate Total:http://askdrellie.blogspot.com/search/label/colgate%20totalAnd Tricolsan:http://askdrellie.blogspot.com/search/label/triclosanincluding also a link to the “Toothpaste Cancer Alert” article In the London Evening Standard.http://www.thisislondon.co.uk/news/article-17956139-details/Toothpaste+cancer+alert/article.do Ellie
