Xylitol after brushing my teeth?

Dear Dr. Ellie,

If I haven’t gotten to 7 grams of xylitol by the end of the day, can I eat one or two mints after I’ve brushed my teeth (flossed and used mouthwash too) at night? Or do they interfere with each other?

Thanks for you attention,

PL

Hi PL,

I know people who eat the mints and gum after brushing their teeth. In fact, several of my “dry mouth” patients use Zellies mints during the night to help their dry mouth.

If you go to this link and watch the video, you will see a little girl eating xylitol after brushing her teeth! This is common in other parts of the world.

I was glad to hear that you are able to enjoy xylitol. People get so confused between the artificial sweeteners and xylitol and many people are nervous to start with. Xylitol is easy to consume without side effects especially in the small amount you need for dental health.

Thanks for your message,
Ellie
