Cleaning Your Toothbrush

Dear Dr. Ellie:

I have been putting our toothbrushes in the dishwasher to clean. They wear out faster, but I thought it would help. What do you think? On our last vacation, I did the Listerine thing (soaking the toothbrush to clean it)…just soaked it in that for awhile. Also, since starting the zellies, my daughter is finding her bleeding gums much better. Thank you very much.

Dear JT,

There is no research to show that a trip through the dishwasher will clean toothbrushes. Listerine has been looked at under study conditions and shown to work…but my hunch is that the dishwasher will work also!

One thing with bleeding gums brush them never avoid them. Everyone has times when their gums seem more prone to bleeding but brush them well (let them bleed) and follow the brushing with lots of good Listerine and ACT. Daily use of Zellies should provide 6.5 grams of xylitol to kill off plaque …..and then things should improve rapidly.

Leaving bleeding gums untreated or letting them continue to be a problem will lead to more serious gum infections.

Hope this helps!
