Eroded Enamel

Dear Dr. Ellie,

Hi! I am trying to restore my teeth after having an eating disorder. The dentists tell me that they are not bad, and still restorable. I am currently using Prevident 5000 for sensitive teeth (now for three months) and ACT rinse, Do you think this will work? I appreciate your ideas and suggestion.

Dear AM in NY,

I am sorry that you are suffering with sensitive teeth it seems to be a common problem these days.

For anyone with sensitive teeth it is really important to understand enamel is soft and delicate like a honey comb structure. Imagine healthy enamel as a lattice or grid filled with minerals (that look like salt crystals) packed tight into the holes between the grid or lattice.

Acids of your stomach can easily dissolve these crystals leaving the enamel lattice with nothing to fill the holes. Enamel that has been “dissolved” is soft, delicate, and prone to staining and feeling sensitive. Liquids can travel along the empty holes and reach the inside of your teeth where cells and nerves are found.

Many pastes and gels for treating sensitive teeth work as a kind of “band-aid” or “temporary” fix. Sensodyne and other “sensitive” toothpastes often behave like spackle patching up the hole but leaving the problem, to occur again.

If you use the rinses that I recommend you will encourage natural repair of your teeth natural minerals will fill in the holes in your enamel and your problems will go away slowly but naturally. Most people with sensitive teeth find their problems resolve within two weeks.
Mark the date you start the system on your calendar and check your teeth after 14 days on the program.

THE MOST important part is to do the rinses in the EXACT way I recommend and the EXACT order no substitutes! Also, finish every meal and snack with some xylitol or tooth-protective food like cheese or nuts.

It may take a year for you to see the entire benefit but I can assure you your teeth will feel better long before that!

As your teeth harden, damage will be repaired and this will make your teeth appear smoother, brighter and whiter over time. Let natural healing take your teeth back to health and then keep them healthy!

If you have any other questions I would be happy to answer them. I do not recommend Prevident myself because I have never found any patients that get better by using it just my personal opinion! I only recommend a specific system of products used in a specific sequence!

Thanks for the question,
