Dear Dr. Ellie,
I have read that Xylitol can be very bad for dogs. Can you confirm this?
M K, Erie PA
Dear M,
Great question! Yes, just like some other “human foods,” dogs have trouble digesting Xylitol, and it may cause them serious harm or even death. So always be careful when feeding your pets table scraps, keep them from getting food (and your Zellies!) from the table and countertops and remind your guests not to sneak food to your dogs. Xylitol will hopefully be used in more and more foods in the coming years, and just as much as we want to give ourselves the benefits of Xylitol, we must remember it isn’t for Fido!
